If you are not one of those people who are not too fond of standardized tests and the rigorous school system and feel you can do a better job teaching your child at home, then homeschooling may be an option for you. The trend in homeschooling is definitely growing in the United States and Canada with more and more families getting disgruntled with the public school system and opting to home school their child especially if he is brighter or weaker than the rest of the class.

With large class sizes and strain on resources, the public school system is fine for average kids; however those that are gifted and those with learning disabilities are not catered to appropriately. Gifted children are not given as challenging a curriculum as they deserve and hence they slack and take school life easy. Children with a disability or different ability also do not get the attention they warrant at many school districts.

Homeschooling can solve these problems provided you are willing to make the commitment to spend a lot of time with your child. Some parents love sending their kids to school as they feel they get some time on their own do stuff inside or outside the house. However, if you opt for home schooling not only will you be spending more time at the kitchen table doing lessons with your child, you will also be chauffeuring him or her to and from extracurricular activities that are essential for the complete development of a child.

Choose a Curriculum

You will need to look through several books on home schooling and sift out materials that you feel will interest your child. You will also need to spend money on teaching materials, text books, school supplies, dry erase boards, workbooks and the like so that your child gets the concepts you are trying to impart. You will also need to have oodles and oodles of patience so that you can enjoy teaching and keep your child engaged in the lesson. You will need to manage time in a way that you are at par with the outline you have designed or one that you are following from a book so that your child is not lagging in any subject area.

Share the Love

If you feel you are better at some subjects than others, you should ask for help from your spouse or other friends and family members so that you get a little break as well as the fact that someone else might be able to do a better job explaining something they passionately enjoy. For instance, you may be good with English and Math, but Science may just not be your forte. Outsourcing that subject to someone you trust for a few hours a week may be the answer to your problems.
